Slate sez: HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DOA?

The HD-DVD and Blu-Ray story has been a fiasco of epic proportions. I don't agree with everything in this analysis - we're a long way from delivering several million copies of "Cars", e.g., via the web, but I do think the new DVD standards will never break out as mass market products before technology catches up and surpasses them. If you look at an up-res'ed standard DVD on a hi-def TV, it's pretty darn good - there's not much incentive to spend hundreds on a new player and then repurchase your collection in a new format.
